Despite its more positive aspects, the internet has provided a release for the more disturbed and perverted amongst us. Whether it is “bum” fights, child porn, or good ol’ fashioned hate speech, the net provides the stage for twisted sport to take place.
Untraceable bases itself on that sad fact. Diane Lane stars as Jennifer Marsh, a FBI Agents assigned to the Cyber Crimes Division where she and her partner (Colin Hanks) patrol the web for those breaking federal laws.
During a routine patrol, Marsh comes across a website entitled "Kill With Me?", an extremely sophisticated and untraceable site which streams live video of various bound and gagged victims whose lives are in the hands of the websites viewers: the more who log in to watch, the quicker they die. Marsh, along with police Detective Eric Box (Billy Burke) must find the culprit before more people are killed.
Director Gregory Hoblit has crafted a career directing solid thrillers, and Untraceable is no exception. It is just a shame that he has succumbed to the torture porn stylings of the Saw films which seriously dates Untraceable and places Hoblit with a lower brand of filmmakers.
Also, Hoblit and co. stumble magnificently by revealing the identity of their killer way to early, as more fun and thrills could have been had with the killer’s anonymity. Regardless, there are suspenseful moments throughout the film, and Diane Lane contributes with a typically good performance.
The films real strength lies within its interesting premise, for Untraceable is a thriller with a heavy moral compass which shines a bright light on internet ethics and the anonymous and Wild West nature of the web in general. For the sad thing is, if there were such a website as depicted in Untraceable, people would visit in drones.
