A big, vibrant, and spirit filled live-action remake of the animation classic, Aladdin succeeds on the talents of its attractive, charismatic cast and the focused efforts of director Gut Ritchie.

The 1992 animation release Aladdin remains one of the most beloved and popular releases from the Walt Disney brand. Not only did it make a squillion at the box-office, and not only did its soundtrack become equally as popular, but it also features one of the best voice work performances found in the animation medium per the late, great Robin Williams. It’s a film that has entertained generations, a film that parents show to their kids while on munching on microwave popcorn. It’s a film that created memories for many young cinephiles.

It’s hard to predict whether this Guy Ritchie (King Arthur) directed live action remake will reach the same heights, yet there is no denying that it will gain a new generation of fans. A colourful and spirited adventure fantasy, Aladdin wins its audience over with its take of good, evil, and the lusting for power and riches. Mostly though it is the performances that charms, with an attractive cast singing, dancing and wooing their way into the hearts of many.

Aladdin stars Mena Massoud as the title character, a street rat with the slightest of hand and charm to spare. When he is coerced by power hungry sorcerer Jafar (Marwen Kenzari) to locate and return a magical artefact, Aladdin finds himself in the presence of a powerful Genie (Will Smith) who has the power to grant three wishes. An assured and confidant Aladdin immediately begins a courtship with the rebellious Prince Jasmine (Naomi Scott), putting them in the sights of the envious and dangerous Jafar.

With the 1992 film as the template, Ritchie successfully recreates many memorable scenes with much aplomb. Ritchie has long established himself as a visualist of impressive style, yet one who (at times) oversteps his mark. With the Disney machine as quality control, Ritchie reigns it into the exact level of gaudiness needed to make a live action Aladdin work. While this is not a “Guy Ritchie film” per se, it is definitely a film that benefits from the British filmmakers’ talents.

A great cast brings much in the way of personality and charisma. Both Mena Massoud and Naomi Scott are terrific as this young couple from opposite ends of town. Incredibly gorgeous to look at and talented in the way of song and dance, Massoud and Scott bring these characters to life with the right blend of innocence and spirit.

Speaking of spirit, kudos should be given to the ever-charming Will Smith who stamps his authority on a role that many believed would be impossible to fill. While his performances of late has seen the Oscar nominee reign in his personality to suit a range of dramatic roles, Smith is free here to bring that charm, humour and cheekiness that made him such a dynamic presence. Indeed, the role of Genie has the “Fresh Prince” at his freshest and most entertaining in years, a timely reminder to how a movie star can command a screen at will.

Great art direction, costume design and beautiful display of colour fills out an adventure fantasy that is as rousing as they come. It may not replace they legacy and memory of the 1992 animation classic, but Aladdin circa 2019 will become a memorable film in its own right.
