Gender bending roles are often featured in broad comedies, or used as a vehicle (or excuse) for an actor to take that journey to Oscar land (Glenn Close in Albert Nobbs, stand up). The role of Jane/John in Predestination is neither, but is instead a complex, sympathetic & tragic character that is brilliantly, astoundingly portrayed by Australian actress Sarah Snook.
The fact that Predestination relies upon the quality of Snook's portrayal to see it through says something, considering that the Spierig Brothers feature is one of the more emotionally, intellectually & compellingly sound sci-fi films seen in some time. To state Snook's performance is a revelation (as this critic did) sums up the power it evokes on the screen, and the haunting quality it maintains after the credits role.
If neither the Australian or American film industry's do not cherish Snook's amazing skill & talent, then may they be damned.
