They say “the talent is in the choices”, and in the case of the cast of Diana that choice is of craptastic proportions.
Exactly how any cast member of Diana thought Stephen Geffrey’s script was good enough to commit to is beyond comprehension, yet sign on they did to the thudding sound of their careers hitting career lows.
Naomi Watts (in a role that many projected could have brought high acclaim) delivers a shallow and annoying portrait of the “people’s princess” that’s all external sheen yet very little soul. Even worse is Naveen Andrews as her lover Dr. Hasnat Khan, delivering Geffrey’s atrocious dialogue with a smug, deranged earnestness (that makes it even worse) while coming off as a pompous ass.
Even the usually solid presence of Geraldine Paige and Julie Stevenson cannot escape the horror of this most horrible of movies. For an example of cinematic quicksand swallowing talented actors slowly and painfully, Diana is for you.
