Great actors can do wondrous things with a beautifully written Woody Allen role, and so it goes with Cate Blanchett in Blue Jasmine, with her portrayal of upper class snob turned lower class wreck Jasmine incredibly funny and heartbreakingly tragic in equal turns.
Blanchett’s uncanny ability to get to the messy crust of her character results in a spellbinding performance, the two time Oscar winner churning out Allen’s wordy dialogue with biting conviction.
That Jasmine is one of the least likeable characters of 2013 doesn’t stop her from being one of the funniest and sympathetic, which is tribute to Blanchett’s skill playing all angles of this remixed version of Blanch Dubois.
